Viola Bass for Rick

This bass will have the following characteritics:

    • Chambered genuine mahogany body
    • Top and back made from curly red maple
    • Body sides veneered with curly maple
    • Bass will be fitted with a Line 6 Variax 700 synth system
    • The neck will be made from a 3-piece curly hard maple blank
    • The scale will be 32"
    • The fingerboard will be dark Indian rosewood

This is the picture the body shape will be based on:

And the template, showing the locations of the controls. Notice how the body is wider than the picture above:

The design for the headstock:

The construction begins with the body, shown here cur to rough shape and ready to be chambered:

Here's the body with the chambers cut and sanded smooth on the drum sander:

The top and back are made from curly red maple. The top is about 9/16" thick, and the back is 1/2" thick. These pictures show them glued into bookmatched plates:

These are the body plates cut to shape. They will overhang the body by 1/8". The points on the body have been sharpened in preparation for adding the maple veneer to the sides of the body:

I bought some veneer softener that will be used to prepare the veneer for bending into rather tight curves.

These are two neck blanks I made up - I will choose one of these for this project:

October 9, 2009: More progress on the neck: the fingerboard has been glued on, after installing the double-action truss rod with the adjustment at the headstock end:

The Top Has Been Carved:

January 20, 2011:   Fitted the rear cover to the body on Monday 1/17, then carved the back side of the body today:

January 21, 2011:  Did some work on the neck:

March 1, 2011:  Some work on the neck:  Staining the fingerboard black to emulate the look of ebony.  We're doing this because Rick does not like the clackiness that an ebony fingerboard contributes to the sound of a fretted bass , but he feels the ebony look is better suited to this bass.

In these two pictures, I'm softening the veneer that will be used on the tight curves at the waist of the body, as well as the cutaway:

Finally, the back of the neck, showing the figure of the maple:

March 31, 2011:  Working on installing the fiddleback veneer on the body sides:

April 3, 2011:  More of the veneer has been completed - the two sections that make up the cutaway area of the body:

April 9, 2011:  Rick sent me a Line 6 Variax 700 Bass body with a complete set of electronics, so I dismantled that today.  Here is the result:

April 22, 2011:  Did some more work on the veneer installation over the last few days:

And here's what the body looks like with the body-side veneer completed:

May 18 2011:  Routing for the neck is done.

December 12, 2011:  The neck, body, and miscellaneous parts were shipped to the customer back in October.  He turned them over to Keith Roscoe for finishing.  Here are a bunch of pictures of Keith as he takes it through the finishing process:

Applying the amber tint to the body:

And the neck:

The cherryburst:

The rear covers are painted black:

Now John Ingram is doing the final assembly:

And here's what it looks like after it's done:
